2016 Mazda CX-3 vs. Honda HR-V vs. Subaru Crosstrek

The Mazda CX-3. The Honda HR-V. The Subaru Crosstrek. What do these three vehicles have in common? Each is a subcompact SUV, each combines rugged utility with city-friendly size and fuel efficiency, and each has earned a considerable number of fans.

Just how well does the Mazda CX-3 measure up against the competition? And how can you tell which one is the right choice for you? We've gone ahead and compared these models for you - check it out below:

Under the hood, the CX-3 edges out the HR-V in raw power and performance. Only the Crosstrek, with a similar array of numbers, can quite keep up. Despite the HR-V's constantly variable transmission, which theoretically has the advantage over a geared transmission like the CX-3 uses, the latter has power where it counts down in the low rev band.

Though each vehicle boasts respectable and similar fuel efficiency, the Mazda CX-3 admittedly tails just behind the competition. The Subaru Crosstrek stands out with a substantially larger tank, gaining nearly 100 extra miles on a single fill-up - convenient for those on cross-country hauls.

All three of these subcompacts have earned a 5-star NHTSA safety rating, and come with a number of essential safety features as standard. Those who choose the 2017 HR-V may miss the Lane Departure Warning system, which has yet to be included in any of Honda's redesigns, although their LaneWatch Blind Spot Monitoring system is highly useful.
